Abstract

This thesis examines whether Pleasure could be considered as a genuine element of the Human Good. The nature and criteria for Human Goods are described, with reference to the authors, John Finn is and Timothy Chappell. Their methods are examined and compared. Intelligibility and self-evidence are both seen to be important common elements of their determination of Human Goods. Objectively Chappell includes Pleasure as a Human Good whereas Finnis specifically rejects Pleasure as an end and ultimate justification for action. It is shown that Finnis does understand that Pleasure has a place not only as a by-product from the pursuit of the Human Goods, but also that elements of what Chappell understands Pleasure to be and therefore his reasoning for including it in his list of Basic Goods are also present in Finnis' understanding of the Good of Play which he includes in his list. Objections to Chappell's view are ultimately upheld and d1e thesis question is held to be positively affirmed.
