Abstract

Marriage remains an important institution that lays the foundation of a family. This is true when it is done at the appropriate age that is not too early or too late. Both early marriage and late marriage have their own negative consequences. This study focused on late marriageandtried to explore the psychological and related consequences of late marriage on women in Addis Ketema sub-city Woreda 2. The study used primary data obtained from a survey conducted on 60 respondents who were selected using convenience and snowballing technic’s and 10 women who were married late using purposive sampling technique. A self-constructed questionnaire and an interview guide were used to gather information from the respondents. Findings of the study revealed that late marriage has a negative psychological consequence on women which results from the negative perception of the community, occurrence of fertility problem and stigmatization which lead to different psychological problems. The study found out that economic problems, trying to find the perfect match and to wait until maturity so as to lead a matured life were the major reasons why people married late. The study also revealed that the community had negative perceptions on delay married and on women who married late. There was no gender difference in the perceptions of male and female respondents on delayed marriage and its consequences except on delayed marriage and its consequencesthe partners to different psychological problems. Based on the findings from the survey, it can be concluded that late marriage has different psychological problems, fertility problems in women and could result in delinquent and abnormal children, discrimination, and stigma by the community.
