Abstract

This study aimed to explore the prevalence of burnout among correctional officers working in Debre-Markos correctional center in relation to areas of worklife. Cross-sectional survey design was employed. 103 correctional officers were selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. The MBI-HSS and AWS are employed for data collection. Pearson correlation coefficient, independent t-test, and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study indicated that 52.57% of the correctional officers had experienced burnout, where 35.05%, 6.18%, and 11.34% had experienced high, average and low degree of burnout respectively. A statistically significant difference was found in their susceptibility to burnout among the correctional officers, neither due to gender nor educational level. Statistically significant difference was found between married and un-married correctional officers in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization but not in personal accomplishment. All differences were in favor of married correctional officers. Significant negative relationship was found between age and burnout but not with work experience. Monthly income was negatively correlated with emotional exhaustion and positively correlated with personal accomplishment, but not with depersonalization. Also, areas of worklife factors was found to be significantly positively and negatively correlated with burnout. Furthermore, workload, fairness, job control, and reward were found to be the best indicator (F (12, 84) = 20. 25, p < .05, R2 = .74) to predict emotional exhaustion. Reward, fairness, job control, work experience and education level were found to be the best indicator (F (12, 84) = 23.18, p < .05, R2 = .76) to predict depersonalization. Job control, reward, and monthly income were found to be the best indicator (F (12, 84) = 4.3, p < .05, R2 = .38) to predict personal accomplishment. The findings are discussed in terms of previous literature on correctional officers and burnout. Based on the findings, it was concluded that correctional officers working in Debre-Markos correctional center had experience burnout in relation with areas of worklife factors. Therefore, it was recommended that planning and implementing measure aimed to reduce the levels of burnout among these professional should be developed by Debre-Markos correctional center and other stakeholders like mental health agencies, social workers, counselors and clinical psychologists.
