Abstract

This study was designed to investigate nature of OCB among teachers. Questionnaires were administered to 300 randomly selected participants and the response rate was 96%. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA, t-test and Pearson product moment correlation. Qualitative data were collected using interview, FGD and observation, and analyzed using narration and thematic analysis. Findings unveiled that few teachers appear to perceive their engagements in OCB positively though there seems to exist some differences based on experience favoring highly experienced ones. Activities that seem to fall in various dimensions of OCB were reported. Related to this, results exposed presence of confusion for purely in-role and forced activities were perceived as OCB. Besides, findings revealed that teachers nature and characteristics (personal goal, commitment, responsibility, and economy), nature of teaching profession, empathy to students and communities, and love of one’s country were indicated as major reasons for ones involvement in OCB. Furthermore, significant mean differences were observed in many OCB dimensions in terms of level of education teachers’ work in, their qualification and experience. Qualitative data also seem to confirm these results. Significant difference was not observed based on gender but qualitative results seem to be slightly in favor of females. Significant positive relationships were found between age and POS with many of the OCB dimensions. Qualitative results however seem to run counter to positive relationship between POS and OCB. On top of these, results revealed that OCB might bear positive and negative consequences. In this regard, a significant difference was observed in outcomes of OCB among participants, putting those working at a tertiary level in good lights. Finally, employing multi-level measures, setting up a national center that coordinates study of organizational issues, designing sound policy, large-scale longitudinal and multidisciplinary studies involving participants from various organizational and cultural backgrounds are recommended to promote OCB.
