Abstract

This research focuses on assessing the psychosocial problems and coping mechanisms of evening learner domestic worker women and children in Arada sub-city, AsteNaode primary and secondary school. It gives attention to psychosocial challenges like low self esteem, interpersonal problem, loneliness, emotional problem and coping mechanisms they use to solve these challenges. The data collection approach used for this research is quantitative. The samples were drawn from those girls who are currently attending evening classes. The findings of this research reveal that children are trafficked from different parts of the country for domestic work and some live and work in the employer‘s home and others work being out of the employer‘s home. In psychosocial challenges, evening learner domestic workers have moderate self esteem; but they have severed experience of feeling of loneliness, problems in interpersonal relationship and emotion. Regarding the strategies they use to cope when confronted with a problem, the findings of the study show that the majority of the respondents use pray, getting help and advice from other people, trying to come up with a strategy on what to do, learning in it, and accepting the reality (the fact that they are in).Among the key recommendations, training has to be given; mobilizing and strengthening community based responses in creating awareness to avoid discrimination of domestic workers in the family and society at large; providing support, care and love as part of the family; promote participation of domestic workers in discussions in the family and community activities to ensure their integral involvement.
