Abstract

The over all objective of the study was to assess the relationship between leadership styles of principals and teachers’ organizational commitment in private secondary schools of Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City. The study was conducted in ten private secondary schools found in Nifas Silk Lafto Sub City and the sample schools were selected by simple random sampling technique. Study was using both qualitative and quantitative approach. Frequency, percentage, mean, Std. deviations and multiple regressions were utilized to analyze the demographic characteristics of the respondents and to see the significane difference between teachers and school leaders on their responses respectively. The study found that the multiple regeressions result there is positive relationship between democratic leadership style and laissez faire leadership style. Besides, affective with continuance and normative organizational commitments are statistically significane. And this implies that contingent reward, management by exception and employees level of commitment such as affective continuance and normative commitment which is employee’s belonging themselves to their organization, when they want to say in their organization and they feel guilty when they need to live the organization. Finally, authoritarian leadership style showed negative significant relationship on affective commitment and have direct control presumed to be negative relationship on continuance commitment. Furthermore, teachers of the sampled secondary schools believed that the existence of autocratic leadership style was found to be not important for their continuity more than the characteristics of leadership styles in explaining the high affective commitment in private secondary schools of Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-City, Addis Ababa City Administration. It was concluded that teachers organizational commitment from the point of view of democratic leadership style was the result of exchanges between job aspects like pay, benefit, recognitions, and promotions with the best performances. Finally, school principals were recommended to encourage teachers to perform special tasks that would develop their talent and creativity.
