Abstract

The end justifies the means is a common phrase identified with Niccollo Machiavelli’s political thought. This was an idea Machiavelli developed basing on the historical context of Italy and her neighbouring states. Thus, Machiavelli perceived political power as the end of politics. Therefore, all means were justified by Machiavelli in the process of acquiring power. Even the wicked actions could be used by a leader while trying to maintain and preserve his authority. This is immoral view of politics. This work explores this notion of political power. It analyses Machiavelli’s notion of political power. It further evaluates, gives a critique, reviews, and presents the influences of Machiavelli’s concept of political power. However, political power is not a property of an individual. It is authority endowed upon the leaders of state so that they may act on behalf of the citizens. Therefore, they should use their position to help develop a civilized culture in which citizens live an ethical and happy life based on good virtues.
