Abstract
The ecological crisis prominently affects human life in Midwest Madagascar. Natural disasters, poverty and insufficient education exemplify the root causes of this crisis. The Church should not only admit what she has missed and failed in her mission and responsibility toward creation, but should also lead Christians and non-Christians in acting together for the sake of the environment, God’s creation. I argue that care for creation is a constitutive dimension of the Church’s mission in Madagascar. The signs of the times, sacred scripture, the teachings of the Church, and significant contemporary theological insights concerning the environment and ecology confirm the peremptoriness of this mission for the Church. All aspects of the Church’s activities must manifest a willingness to accomplish such a mission. These aspects include liturgy and worship which are important loci to promote care for creation. The Church’s faith, marked as a willingness to do justice, must work for the eradication of poverty and of social injustices through quality education, along with the implementation of ecologically advanced technologies in agriculture and farming. The work concludes with some specific suggestions for precisely contributing to these aims.
