Abstract

This dissertation aims at exploring critico-creative education (CCE) as one of African education's most important needs. The dissertation suggests that this is a useful approach to address and transform Africa's socio-economic and political problems. It focuses on critico-creative teaching and learning so that CCE can become an effective way of empowering many Africans for responsibility in order to help them become more proactive in bringing about beneficial change. CCE is needed largely because conservative traditions of education in Africa have failed to a great extent to develop people of vision, people who can reflect on situations, imagine possibilities and initiate relevant and responsible action, and thereby transform situations for the betterment of society. Due to the many Shortcomings of conservative education in addressing many African problems, I propose a CCE as an alternative approach to education in Africa. The above stated thesis calls for a critico-creative analysis of various factors that justify the claim that there is a need for CCE in Africa. This CCE should be tailored to the African context, though without disregard for a global perspective, so that Africans can be enabled to determine their own destiny. To achieve this end, a pedagogy that views learners as active subjects rather than as passive objects in the educational process should be encouraged. Such pedagogy has a capacity of developing people's critical and creative capabilities for active participation as opposed to a culture of silence, passivity and unquestioning loyalty to authority. which are prevalent in many African countries. The CCE that I recommend is capable of developing people who are able to perceive, interpret, reflect, criticise situations, and creatively apply their acquired knowledge and skills in transforming the world about them.
