Abstract
This research attempts to investigate the headteachers’ perceptions of Adult Education degree graduate teachers in the Copperbelt Province. The study was carried out in three objectives. The first objective was to investigate the Headteachers’ Perceptions of Adult Education degree graduate teachers; the second objective was to establish the existing work relationship between headteachers and Adult Education graduate teachers; and the last was to find out the relevance of Adult Education in schools. The research design used in this study was a case study. The study aimed at collecting information from respondents on their perceptions of Adult Education degree graduate teachers in the Copperbelt Province. The tool which was employed in the research was a questionnaire. The researcher used both primary and secondary data to collect facts from a sample of 125 Headteachers. Primary data was obtained using questionnaires while secondary data was found from the internet, journals and books. The questionnaires were distributed to all the shortlisted headteachers and were given five (5) days in which to respond. The findings showed that there were different perceptions of Adult Education degree graduate teachers by headteachers. Headteachers could not give a proper definition of Adult Education as a result they perceived the course as an inferior one. Headteachers further, felt that the programme should have a teaching subject. They believed that Adult Education as a stand-alone course did not really fit in schools instead it had to be directed to the Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health. In view of the findings, suggestions were made that University of Zambia to orient all headteachers in Adult Education programmes.
