Abstract

This study was conducted in the drought prone Woreda of La-elay Machew,Dura Kebelle, Tigray region. The general objective of the study was to assess the impact of Mai-Nigus irrigation on household food security with specific objectives of assessing its contribution towards increasing agricultural production, household income and the potential to reduce dependency on food assistance. The study also looks at the water allocation and distribution processes of the irrigation schemes. To achieve these objectives, household survey, interview, self observation and focus group discussion were used to collect data at household and individual level. Annual household production, income generated, asset owned and other socio-economic data were collected using questionnaire and secondary data source. Background information of the study area, irrigation potential, food aid status, number of beneficiaries, market survey, etc data were gathered from concerned government departments and institutions operating at Woreda and Zone level. The finding of the study highlights the positive impact of irrigation development. It helps to sustain, diversify high value of yields and income source opportunity, boosted agricultural production, expands agricultural farm area and creates job opportunity to both member household and community job seekers and improves household access to marketable foods. Moreover, the results of the study showed that households with access to irrigation have able to diversify their diet composition and found better nutrition status due to diversified food sources produced through the use of irrigation. The study also revealed that irrigation promotes and enables farmers to own assets, to generate more income and to maintain continuous production through supply of water during the dry season and when the amount and distribution of the main rain is found to be inadequate. Such opportunities improved food availability and food security situation of irrigation user households. In general, it is possible to conclude that Mai Nigus dam irrigation has brought a considerable progress and improvement of sustainable food security in the livelihood of the rural farmers. Thus, shift to agricultural production intensification through the practice of irrigation can be commendable alternative strategy in drought prone areas to produce surplus production in order to support economic growth and poverty reduction.
