Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of academic self-efficacy and achievement motivation on academic achievement and to make assessment on the needs for counseling. This study was a descriptive and an ex-post facto type of research that used a cross sectional design for data collection. This study took 376 students from Ethio-Japan and Bulbula secondary schools using stratified (i.e. Gender and grade level) and simple random sampling. The data analysis was conducted using mean, standard deviation, range, independent-sample t-test, Pearson correlation and multiple regression. The result of this study revealed that most of the students had low level in academic self-efficacy 199 (52.92%), achievement motivation 69 (18.35%) and academic achievement 47 (12.50%); and medium level academic self-efficacy 176(46.81%), achievement motivation 247 (65.69%) and academic achievement 272 (72.34%). The result of independent- sample t-test analysis showed that there was only significant difference in achievement motivation and academic self-efficacy and achievement motivation for gender comparison and grade level comparison in favor of female and grade 10 respectively. There was also statistically significant relationship between age and academic achievement, academic selfefficacy and academic achievement, achievement motivation and academic achievement, and also achievement motivation and academic self efficacy. The multiple regression result indicated that academic self-efficacy and achievement motivation together contributed 10.2% of the variance on academic achievement. Of this total variance, achievement motivation contributed 9%.
